Summer Pregnancy: Mom-to-be’s Summer Survival Guide

Pregnancy is an interesting and exciting experience for any pregnant woman, but it can also be unpleasant at times, especially in summers. Summer temperatures in most parts of the country climb, which can be inconvenient for a pregnant lady.

When a woman is pregnant, her body undergoes unique modifications to fit the baby. Some of these changes can cause discomfort to the pregnant mother,  higher than actual temperature will only exacerbate the problem.

The doctor claims that pregnant women face unique hardships during the summer, but that there are several tips that can help them feel better.

1. Hydration

Drink at least 3 litres of water per day to stay hydrated. Add tender coconut and fresh fruit juices with low or no sugar.

2. Diet

Make sure to eat plenty of veggies, greens, sprouts salads, and fruits (particularly watermelon). Buttermilk and curd are very cooling. Reduce salt intake by avoiding excessive oil, ghee, and masalas in food preparation.

3. Exercise

This is an excellent way to cool off, and if you have access to a pool, you should take use of it. Exercise should be done in the early mornings or in the nights when the surroundings are cooler.

4. Elevated feet

Elevating your feet by placing them on pillows or cushions will help to minimise water retention in your feet and legs.

5. Clothing and shoes

Wear loose cotton clothing in white or pastel colours. Also, to accommodate the swelling, choose comfortable footwear.

6. Sunglasses/sunscreen/umbrella

When you’re out for longer periods of time, invest in a nice pair of sunglasses and use sunscreen. Protect yourself by carrying an umbrella or wearing a broad hat.

7. Bath with cool water

On these hot days, the cool water bath makes you feel comfortable and a lot more pleasant. Swimming is also very good for pregnant women, so if you have time, just go to the pool near your house to enjoy cool summer.

8. Sleep

Try to get a nap for at least 30 minutes in the afternoon, since it is the hottest part of the day.

Try to inculcate these things on hot summer days mommies.
